New Light From Old

I have been making some candles with my son. Well to be more accurate I have been emptying out the old left over wax from various vessels and combining it with some very pretty soft rose broken candles and a little bit of beeswax, and a few drops of essential oils. I am very pleased with the results.

In the past I have bought a number of expensive candles because they are in pretty/interesting containers, like the two above. The one on the left I believe is Victorian glass and the one on the right is a hand made studio pot.

The original candle in the glass vessel was lovely but didn't burn well and loads of wax was left stuck around the inside. As you can see from the photos I put all the old wax in my trusty thrifted aluminum bain marie and heated slowly. The new wicks are ethically sourced and have no nasties in them.

Once I have used these up I will be buying quality wax to make new ones.

I shall be making all my own candles in future as the process is so simple and I know that I'm not burning anything that may be giving off toxic fumes.

  1. What a clever idea to have a little hole drilled in the 'lolly pop sticks', I used to put one stick on each side of the wick, this is a much better idea. I switched to soya wax to make my candles with before I stopped making them altogether. It does burn so much cleaner. Your containers are lovely and deserve to be reused over and over. xx

  3. Phew! Initially I thought that was a bunch of hot dogs and bread crumbs in that bain marie and was concerned about what you were up to. LOL Good for you for recycling your wax. I used to do that years ago but have since given up. I actually don't use many candles any more - I'm more partial to wax melts on an electric burner... Cats are less likely to mess with it and I'm less likely to leave a lit candle burning. ;-)

    1. Ha ha, yes I thought thay looked like our British saveloy sausages. But they were lovely dinner candles. I bought them broken with the intent of melting them down.

  4. What a wonderful idea! I've got oodles of those glass vessels with loads of wax stuck on the inside, so I might try my hand at making my own candles too! xxx
