Are You Resisting?

How are we all doing in the run up to Christmas? Are you managing to resist the money making machines of big business? I consider myself very good now at 'thinking over' purchases, it wasn't always thus. I love nice things and I do succumb sometimes to 'pretties'. This time of year though I feel bombarded with constant special offers, which let's face it most are not special offers at all.

I saw these beautiful little hedgehogs yesterday and thought oooh hand made, wonderfully cute packaging, what a lovely gift. Friends I was tempted, BUT I took a breath and regained my senses.

They are £9.99 plus p&p, for three chocolates, with a total weight of 60gms.

These little chaps below are from the famous Bettys, it sort of feels like you are getting more for your money.

But beware they weigh in at 50gms and cost £8.75 plus p&p.

Whereas  my favourite chocolate of choice from Lidls weighs in at 125gms, with only 12% sugar (added bonus), and costs under £2.00 or thereabouts.

The brand is lower end and the packaging doesn't scream GIFT, but I feel with a little effort it could be fancied up, is that a term? It is now.  The chocolate itself is divine and good for you, that's what I like to believe anyway:)

I did however recently purchase a Victorian brooch which I was quite unable to resist. In my defence when will I find another? It depicts the Goddess of the night Nyx and the Goddess of the morning Aurora, with two wild companions, an owl and an eagle. I haven't worn it yet but I have gazed at it often and it brings me such joy.

See what you can buy if you save your pennies on other things? Yes I hear you cry, essentials like Victorian cameos.

  1. I would much rather have an 'essential' like a Victorian cameo than a cute but very overpriced chocolate hedgehog that's gone in a flash and is only a brief happy memory. I have managed to keep my 'sensible head' on up to now ... but you never know what's around the corner!!

    1. So true. The mr and I were out today looking for an armchair, I couldn't find what I wanted at the price. Saw a nice one reduced in OKA as it was ex display but still too much compared to their Black Friday prices so I walked away. We popped into Sofas & Stuff, their single armchairs are around £3, 500 per chair!!!!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes. Who pays that ? We also popped into 'your' Booths, very nice indeed.

  2. What a tempting post!!! ;-) Your brooch is positively glorious! I can easily see why you succumbed. At first glance, however, I thought you were going to tell me it was chocolate too - layers of dark, milk, and white. Anyhow…all of your chocolates got my full attention. The hedgehogs and little mini g-men are adorable and, I agree, the packaging is wonderful. But, yes, not much for the money. I’d opt for the large bar too…AND the brooch.

  3. I often see cameos in auctions (rarely as lovely as yours) and they sell very cheaply considering the skill and artistry involved in making them. I suppose that they are out of fashion. I have often been tempted myself. I think I would be more than tempted if I saw that one!

    1. Thanks for your comment Tracy, I don't think I've seen you on here before, welcome. Yes I too often see other Cameos, but this one was exquisite. I aim to glue on an additional clasp on the back so I don't lose it.

  4. The Lidl chocolate 85% is my favourite. Like everything else, it has crept up in price and is now £2.39 so I stocked up with 3 cakes yesterday! 1 piece a day is my treat. Catriona

    1. Yes small amounts are very good for you and if you're like me it's enough. Unlike the dates I ate last night, I had to put them away in the end to stop me eating them.

  5. Your brooch looks very nice.
Chocolate has certainly increased in price in recent months, I do enjoy the occasional square of dark chocolate ...

    All the best Jan

  6. What a stunning brooch! I would have bought it too. And I too would have been tempted by the hedgehogs but would have baulked at the price! They are too cute to eat anyway! xxx
