Would You Like A Reading Room?
If we have the space in our new home I would love a sun filled and cosy reading room. In my dreams it would have a glorious log burner and beautiful architectural features.
I'm also thinking it should have a Bloomsbury vibe. Years of working at Charleston Farmhouse has rubbed off on me, I have very fond memories of my time there. And luckily I did buy a few things for my house. This Chair is covered in a Duncan Grant designed fabric. It was designed for the first class areas of The Queen Mary in the 1930s I believe. The design was never used, the total design concept deemed too modern and with nudes mixed in the design, too controversial.
I couldn't believe my luck this week when a pair of interlined curtains in the same fabric but in a different colourway came up on Freegle. I wasn't the first to reply and request them but managed to get them from a very nice lady who is a big fan of the 'Bloomsberries'. My guardian angel was looking out for me methinks. We had a lovely chat about Charleston and she said she was so pleased to give me the curtains.
My risque standard lamp will add the right finishing touch to my reading room I feel. It was an expensive item when I bought it many many years ago from The Charleston shop, I don't think I could afford it now. I absolutely love it.
What do you think folks, do you like the Bloomsbury designs or are they too funky and bright for you?

ReplyDeleteYes I know what you mean.
DeleteI'd definitely have a reading room if I had the space. Your armchair looks so comfortable. Love your red wall and the lamp, I had one wall painted red in the dining room at our old house, I loved it so much, it gave such a cosy feel to the place.
ReplyDeleteThe armchair is quite old now, but yes, still very comfortable. If I can't sleep at night I go and sit in it and read for a while, sometimes with a herbal tea.

ReplyDeleteWell??? You probably know my answer to your question as I am primitive at heart and colonial at best LOL... Just too modern for me I fear...but I do very much love your funky lamp!! I can definitely see that in a cozy reading room. (Oh, and as to your very first question, YES!! I would most definitely love a reading room!) ~Robin~
ReplyDeleteI think the fabrics were designed kinda post jazz age and were a world away from the very staid Victorian designs that Grant lived amongst as a young man. Although his family were wealthy so I would imagine he always lived in luxury. He famously said he never did a single thing in his life he didn't want to do. Lucky man.
DeleteI think a Reading room sounds absolutely perfect Jean. And yes I do love the bloomsbury designs.
ReplyDeleteI thought you would like the designs and especially the colours.
DeleteReading rooms are a wonderful idea, a warm and cosy one for me :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Would be great to have one now the weather is getting chilly. Still must not complain we do have a fab log burner in our living room which is very cosy indeed.
DeleteWhat a lucky find, and a Bloomsbury/Charleston House inspired reading room would be right up my street! xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks PP. Hope all is well with you.
