Knitted Art Installation at Dumfries House Unveiled.

I have no idea how much media coverage this kindly art installation has received. But I'm glad I did spot the unveiling on Facebook. During lockdown I heard about this initiative to get folk back to knitting and also to encourage people to take up knitting. As I understand it knitting skills are slowly being lost and that would be such a tremendous shame.

The Prince's Foundation is at the heart of this idea and so Dumfries House put out a call to knitters all over the world to contribute. Knitted squares arrived from Italy, Belguim, Tasmania, United States, Canada and Derbyshire. The ones from Derbyshire were knitted by me! I can't spot them in the photo, but I'm pleased to think they are part of the installation and I believe the squares will be donated as blankets to the homeless this Winter.

  1. How wonderful to know that you've contributed to such a fabulous project. I think knitting is experiencing a revival, there's a great choice of yarn shows now, something I'd never heard about just a few years ago, and a good choice of yarn too. Stars such as Julia Roberts and Tom Daley have shown that knitting is fashionable, it used to be considered as something your granny did.

  2. What a great idea! I did not realize knitting was considered a dying art, but it doesn't surprise me...so many are. But I am surprised you are knitter. (Did I know that?? Sorry...too many things going on in this ting I call a mind these days.) ~Robin~

    1. It has kinda become a dying art over the years with mass production of cheap knitwear and the fashion for sweatshirts etc But I still like to make things for friends and family. I made a very sweet cardigan for my friends baby, well over 30 years ago and she still has it, because it was a gift that felt special. There are the most amazing knitting patterns now but they take time and patience. I haven’t got enough of either at the moment. Plus I do have a number of small embroidery projects I would like to get on with. Jean. X
